February 13th, 2012

Good Morning,

It has been awhile since I've filled you in on what is going on in the 4th grade classroom. We are busy learning about South Dakota. We have begun our South Dakota Road Trip, we are researching our Famous South Dakotan, we have glanced at our South Dakota Books from Santel, and we have begun our South Dakota Map Project. The students continue to work hard learning new math strategies and techniques and becoming more familiar with long division and more challenging multiplication problems. We just finished reading the book "Shiloh" in class and the students got to see the movie. They realized there are sometimes many differences between a movie and a book. This is our last unit before review week and we have focused much of our grammar on Pronouns. See if they can recite any for you off hand!! We will be celebrating Valentine's Day tomorrow with a little party that should be lots of fun. The students continue to create different thoughtful gifts to send over to the Prairie View Care Center which they enjoy very much. We will continue to work on our South Dakota projects and can't wait to share our Famous South Dakotan information with you!! I look forward to visiting with you at Parent-Teacher Conferences and hope all is well! Thank you for all the extra work at home!!

Good Morning!!

I see it has been a month since I last posted a blog! It has a been a very busy month for sure! The students were kept busy all through the month of December with different projects and things to focus on each week. We didn't quite finish Mr. Popper's Penguins ( so that is on the agenda this month), but we did get to watch the movie and they loved it! The students did a fantastic job at their Christmas Concert! I do have pictures that you will get at the end of the year :) Some other highlights from December include our baking experience for parent gifts, our Christmas Reader's Theater, and then of course or Christmas Party to wrap up the 1st Semester. It was a great 1st semester and I'm hoping the 2nd semester can be filled with just as much excitement and joy! I have lots of things planned for the remaining school year! We will hopefully get a chance to interview our residents at the Prairie View Care Center and create biographies for them. Also, a big project we will soon begin is our Unit on South Dakota history. I have lots of resources that I use to teach the students all they need to know about South Dakota. They get to go on their very own South Dakota Road Trip without leaving the classroom! Another piece that goes along with is our Famous South Dakotan Museum... I'll have more information on that soon! We will be finishing up verbs next week and on to adjectives!! I'll try to keep you up to date better this 2nd semester!

Happy New Year!!

December 4th

Good Afternoon,

We have made it to December and can't complain to much about the weather! The students have been working very hard this quarter on many different activities. The next few weeks will be very busy in the 4th grade. The students will continue working on their literature circles with the 5th graders and begin researching their author to develop a powerpoint presentation. This past week we began reading Mr. Popper's Penguins in class. The students are enjoying this book along with the activities that come with it! Friday I sent home a Reader's Theater Script for the students that we will present the last week before Christmas break. We are continuing our normal studies focusing on Kids At Work this week in reading. This unit relates to students doing their part to see our environment continues to stay clean. The students will continue working on the SE Region brochures as well. Each week during December we will work on different Christmas related activities to prepare for the holiday!! Just a reminder to make sure your child is bringing proper clothing for the cooler weather. Also, the Christmas concert is slated for this coming Thursday at 7pm!

Happy Holidays!!

November 14th

Good Morning,

Well, it has been another 2 weeks since my last blog and the 4th grade class continues to amaze me and make me proud! Our Veteran's Day Activity went off without a hitch and there were numerous compliments for the outstanding work the 4th graders and 8th graders did. The students also created a couple projects that were done at home and WOW!! The Inventions and Ecosystems the students created were SPECTACULAR! Thank you so much for all the additional help at home! We are now moving to more exciting things coming up in 4th grade! This week we will start literature circles with the 5th grade. The studetns will be expected to read a certain amount of pages/chapters each week for regular group discussions. The students will need to be thinking about a Final Project that will be due before Christmas. This project will be with the 5th grade class. We will do some Thanksgiving activities this week and next and also create something for our adopted residents at the nursing home. We will begin Unit 3 in reading primarily discussing verbs. We also move on to the Southeast Region of the United States. There is a lot going on so make sure you are checking those Fridge Facts to be aware of exciting things happening in the classroom! Enjoy this beautiful weather we have!! Until next time.....

October 16th

Good Evening,

What a beautiful weekend! I hope you all have enjoyed the weather and had success with your hunting endeavors! We had a great homecoming week! The kids worked really hard considering the distractions of what comes along with homecoming. This last week our reading unit was "New Places New Faces". We discussed some great vocabulary words that coincide with social studies. Words like boycott, strikes, and unions are things we will talk about in the future! We started working with multiplication and the kids are doing great! I introduced the Northeast region and we are learning the states and capitals in this area. There will be a quiz Tuesday!! We are still talking about animals and how they adapt to survive.

This week our reading is unit is "Focus on China". We will be talking about the culture in China and reading a couple different selections related to China. We will continue talking about nouns becoming a bit more specific with irregular nouns. In math we'll be working with squares and square roots, working with word problems, and more multiplication facts! The students will take their states/capitals quiz Tuesday and we will continue discussing the Northeast Region in more detail. We will have another lesson in science and then do some review for a test the following week!

Hope you are enjoying the fall weather!! Remember to keep your children on the ball with homework! The 1st quarter ends Friday!!

October 9th

Good Morning,

I hope you are all having a wonderful weekend and adjusting to the more "fall-like" temperatures:) We had another great week in the 4th grade! Our theme this past week was "Baseball" which was fitting because of the playoffs currently in full swing! We talked about some of our favorite baseball legends such as Babe Ruth, Barry Lou Gehrig, etc. In grammar we are talking about nouns, more specifically common and proper nouns! We finished up Unit 1 in our Social Studies books with a Open Book/Partner Test. In science we discussed how bodies of animals help them meet their needs! We also began looking at multiplication! Friday afternoon we reviewed missing numbers with our handheld devices and worked with the Pre-School on the IPADS. There are a lot of fun new apps on the IPADS great for 4th grade!!

This next week is homecoming week! Take a look at the fridge facts so your child can dress accordingly. It is also a short week which means we will be working extra hard to get everything in in just 3 days so we can relax and enjoy homecoming festivities on Friday! In reading we will be exploring "New Places, New Faces" focusing on children in other countries. We will dig deeper into nouns discussing singular and plural nouns this week. In math we will continue to dive into more multiplication and end the week with a Chapter 5 test! This week finds us in the Northeast Region in social studies. The students will locate and label the states and capitals in the Northeast Region. Eventually they will be expected to know this by memory!!! This week will be a great, short week!!!

Happy Homecoming!!!
