Friday September 23rd

Happy Autumn!!

Well, it is official! Today marks the first day of Autumn! Another great week in the 4th grade. The kids have been working so hard this week! Our reading unit this week was on Wildlife and our main reading selection was "The Raft" so to incoporate this into some creative thinking, the students created their own rafts and we tested them out today!! So far, all the students rafts float! This week wraps up our first Unit in our reading series so next week we will be doing several review activities!! This afternoon the students worked on an art project with Mrs. Moody and the 5th grade. Next week we can look forward to our interviews with our Veterans in the community and creating notes or cards for the residents at the Prairie View Care Center in Woonsocket! Thanks for all you are doing at home!! We are having a great 1st quarter and the kids are all doing wonderful!!

Have a great weekend!!!

Tuesday September 20th

Good Morning,

Time flies when you are having fun!! We've been very busy in the 4th grade. Hence the reason we haven't had time to post some of the things we've been doing. We are doing a variety of different activities. The students are finishing up their first art project which is on display in the hallway!! They are also finishing up their first pen pal letter to students in Willow Lake!! Finally, we are working on an All About Me Gazzette which is similar to a newspaper article. Last week we dove into our Veteran's Activity with the 8th graders and will work on a time that they can come in a present their interviews to the vets. Something else I introduced to the students was an "Adopt - a - Resident" activity. Basically once a month the students will create something as simple as a note to send to the residents at the Prairie View Care Center. These are all the extras I've incorporated into our classroom. This week we are discussing Wildlife. In teams the students will create their own raft to test on Friday to see if it will float or sink!!! This is the last Week in Unit 1 so next week will be a review week!! The students did very well on their last math test. They will have another one this Friday. Students will have their FIRST science test next week! We are having a great time in 4th grad and I'm so excited for all the opportunities we have going on!!

Have a great day!

Wednesday September 14th

Hello,

Wow, a tad bit cooler then what we've been experiencing:) Make sure your child is bringing a light jacket or sweatshirt for recess it is a little chilly in the morning! Yesterday we read "The Astronaut and the Onion" in our reading text book and discussed realistic fiction stories. In grammar we discussed complex sentences and reviewed how to use a conjunction in longer sentences. We reviewed some math functions using our handheld devices and subtracted 2-digit numbers with regrouping in math! After music we discussed "The American People" in our social studies book. We had a great day!

Today we re-read our main selection and answered some comprehension questions. After that we discussed our solar system and learned how to use a diagram. We did some editing in our grammar and spelling workbooks today! After lunch we met with the 8th grade students to begin our Veteran activity. I think the activity we have planned for our collaboration is going to be great! The students are now busy taking their 2nd Math Test of the school year! They will be off to PE shortly and will finish up their test when they return. The rest of the afternoon we will be discussing Heredity and family trees in Science!

Have a great evening and stay warm:)

Monday September 12th, 2011

Good Afternoon,

Well, I think the students survived the last warm day of this year anyway!!! There were even any complaints:) Another short week, so make sure your students are studying those spelling words each night! Today we started reading about astronauts in our Reading Unit. The students learned 7 new vocabulary words... ask them what they are and what they mean!! In grammar we are still discussing complex sentences and how to combine sentences together. We are also discussing independent and dependent clauses. In math we are keep building our addition and subtraction skills with 2 and 3 digit numbers. Finally, in science today we started looking at our vocabulary words in Chapter 2 which is about Life Cycles. Make sure your child is bringing a sweatshirt or light coat... It looks like the rest of the week may be a bit cooler.

Wednesday September 7 and Thursday September 8

Good Morning,

Yesterday we kept ourselves very busy moving through our reading unit this week discussing Our National Parks. We talked about the food chain and how it affects the National Parks and what we can do to save our National Parks. The students were responsible for finding the Main Ideas and Details in our story we read. We discussed the three conjunction words used to join compound sentences together... Ask your child if they can remember these:) We did some math review using our handheld devices and then began Chapter 2 discussing missing addends in story problems. We finished up Chapter 1 Lesson 3 in science classifying animals.

Today we will read "Saving a National Park" and design a campaign for saving National Parks in our area. We will hopefully get a chance to work at stations this morning depending on what we get done in grammar and spelling. This afternoon the students have computers and PE. After those activities we will work with missing numbers in subtraction and finish Chapter 1 Lesson 4 in social studies: Natural Resources in America. Tomorrow is Friday which means a spelling test... be sure your child is studying tonight. We will also work with the Pre-School tomorrow and help them get acquainted with the IPads.

Have a great day!

Tuesday September 6th

Hello,

I hope you all had a fabulous long weekend! I sure enjoyed the beautiful weather! My apologies the fridge facts didn't get sent home on Thursday for the students to review the new spelling words. I had someone fill-in for the last 10 minutes so I could get to practice... we'll be sure to work extra hard this week to make up for that! We got back into the swing of things this morning with a spelling pre-test and an introduction to Our National Parks. The students finished up describing their mystery picture in computer class and played mat ball in PE. This afternoon we did an investigation in math looking at number lines. We finished up the day talking about different climates in the United States! Another short week this week so make sure your child is studying those spelling words!!!

Have a great night!

Wednesday August 31st and Thursday September 1

Hello,

Sorry we missed you yesterday! We were very busy and very HOT!!!! Still very hot today! We are anxiously waiting to get out of school to have some fun at the fair this weekend, but before that happens we have work to be done!! Yesterday we moved on in our reading unit learning about cinquain poetry, assonances, and metaphors!! We continued discussing subjects and predicates. We had computers and continued typing up our mystery pictures! Our day ended discussing the plant kingdom. We now know there are two types of plants... vascular and nonvascular!! Ask your child the difference.

Today we've been busy also. We have taken a spelling test, reading and grammar quiz, and are currently working on our first math test of the year!! This afternoon it is rather steamy in our room so we'll spend the remainder of the day using the ipad 2's.

Have a great, safe holiday weekend!
